Your customers find broken links before you do

Products get deleted.

Collections move.

Campaign links live forever.

Old blog posts keep sending traffic.

Search engines remember URLs long after you've changed them.

404Guard shows you which broken URLs are actually receiving visitors so you know what needs fixing first.

How it works

  1. 1. Monitor

404Guard quietly detects real visits to Shopify 404 pages.

  2. 2. Prioritize

See which broken URLs receive the most traffic and where visitors are coming from.

  3. 3. Fix

Create Shopify redirects directly from 404Guard.

What you can do with it

  • Real visitor monitoring

Focus on broken pages people actually encounter. A URL with no visitors stays out of the way.

  • Find lost search traffic

See when Google and other search engines send visitors to missing pages.

  • Find broken internal links

Identify pages inside your own store that point to missing URLs.

  • Smart redirect suggestions

Get likely destination suggestions based on your existing Shopify content. The score is a match score, not an AI claim.

  • One-click Shopify redirects

Create redirects without leaving Shopify Admin. 404Guard writes a real Shopify URL redirect.

  • Bot filtering

Keep scanners and junk traffic out of your main dashboard. Those hits stay recorded, just hidden by default.

Built to stay out of your storefront's way

404Guard does not crawl every page on every visit.

The storefront script is tiny and only sends an event when a visitor lands on a 404 page.

  • No visual storefront changes
  • No customer tracking
  • No session replay
  • No advertising scripts
  • No blocking page requests

We track broken pages, not shoppers

404Guard needs to know which URL failed.

It does not need to know who the visitor was.

Questions

What is a Shopify 404 error?

A 404 means the storefront was asked for a URL that does not match a live product, collection, page, blog post, or other route. The theme shows Shopify's 404 template. The URL may be an old product handle, a mistyped link, or a campaign that ended.

How does 404Guard detect broken links?

After you enable the app embed, 404Guard checks Shopify's page type. When that type is 404, the embed sends the path and referrer to 404Guard. It does not look for the words "page not found" in the theme, so it works in languages other than English.

Does 404Guard crawl my Shopify store?

No. 404Guard does not walk your catalog or request every URL. It records visits that already happened on the 404 template. Pages nobody requests do not become issues.

Can 404 errors hurt SEO?

A 404 is a normal response, and Google does not treat every missing URL as a ranking penalty. The practical damage is visitors and internal links that land nowhere, especially when a URL used to be a real page. Redirect the URLs that still receive traffic. Leave irrelevant junk alone.

Can I create redirects with 404Guard?

Yes. From a broken URL you can pick a suggested destination, search products, collections, pages, and articles, or type a path. 404Guard creates the redirect in Shopify. It blocks a redirect that would loop, and it warns you when the destination already redirects somewhere else.

Does 404Guard slow down my Shopify store?

The app embed loads asynchronously and does nothing on normal pages. It only sends a small request when the current page is a 404. It does not change the theme layout, block rendering, or add advertising scripts.

Does 404Guard track customers?

No. 404Guard stores the broken path, aggregated hit counts, and where the visit came from (for example Google, or a page on your own store). It does not store customer names, emails, cookies, cart contents, or IP addresses.

Is 404Guard free?

Yes. The launch plan is free: monitoring, broken URLs, redirect suggestions, redirect creation, traffic sources, bot filtering, 12 months of aggregated history, and weekly reports. There is no paid tier on the pricing page.

What happens after I create a redirect?

Shopify starts sending visitors from the old path to the destination you chose. 404Guard marks that issue Redirected. If the redirect is later deleted in Shopify, the issue returns to Open and shows that the redirect no longer exists.

Does 404Guard work with custom Shopify themes?

Yes, when the theme supports Shopify app embeds. That includes Online Store 2.0 themes and vintage themes that can run app embeds. You turn the embed on in the theme editor. You do not edit Liquid.
